Top 10 List for Earthquake Safety

After Japan Earthquake people in California try to be more prepared tor the Big One.
Emergency kit are sold more than usual and we are constantly reminded about Earthquake Safety:

A few simple precautions could help you survive should a major
earthquake occur while you are on campus.

BEFORE AN EARTHQUAKE

1. Identify safe places to "drop, cover, and hold on." Be prepared
to act.

2. Keep emergency supplies close at hand, including enough water and
snacks for 24 hours. Other basics include a flashlight, first aid kit,
gloves, and sturdy shoes.

3. Work with your supervisor to utilize campus resources to anchor
tall furniture and arrange your work area for safety.

DURING AN EARTHQUAKE

4. Remain calm. If you are indoors, stay there. Drop to the floor,
cover your head and neck, and hold on. Position yourself under a desk
or table, or next to an interior wall.

5. If you are outdoors, move to an open area away from falling hazards
such as trees, power lines, and buildings. Drop to the ground, and
cover your head and neck.

AFTER AN EARTHQUAKE

6. Remain calm and reassuring. Check yourself and others for injuries.
Use your training to provide first aid, use fire extinguishers, and
assist others.

7. Expect aftershocks.

8. Be ready to act without electricity or lights.

9. If you must leave a building, use extreme caution. Do not re-enter
damaged buildings until an all-clear is given.

10. Use telephones only to report a life-threatening emergency. Try
text messaging as phone systems will be overloaded.
